Review: Sol de Janeiro Bum Bum Cream

My skin type: Dry, eczema.

About

Arguably, the most popular body cream as of late has been Sol de Janeiro’s Bum Bum Cream.

This rich, thick body butter is meant to moisturize, “tighten“, and “firm” the look of skin.

It uses conditioning ingredients such as Cupuacu Butter, Coconut Oil, Acai Oil, Brazil Nut, Squalane, and Sodium Hyaluronate. See the full list here.

With their signature Cheirosa ’62 fragrance, this cream boasts a delectable scent of vanilla, pistachios, salted caramel, and jasmine. Somehow, it’s fitting for summer and winter. It’s warm, yet fresh.

Of course, given its absolutely delicious scent, it is not fragrance free. It is also not alcohol-free or silicone-free.

Review

Although I find the cream overpriced, it is most definitely a special thing to have on hand due to its unique, lasting scent and softening abilities.

Firstly, I love the fragrance of this cream so much. It’s quite unique, so it isn’t something you can find anywhere (unlike their Coco Cabana scent, which I loathe). The vanilla and caramel create that delicious sweetness that I crave as a gourmand lover; the pistachios add a sharpness that I honestly don’t like very much, but it’s buffered by the other notes. All together, it’s delicious.

This is a powerful cream when it comes to absorption and moisture. I find it absorbs incredibly quickly — it sinks right in and stays. My skin feels exceptionally soft and smooth all day. The only spot that needs reapplication would be my hands as they go through the most all day.

I do have eczema, and thus I often have flare-ups and itchy skin which are made worse by the winter. I find that the Bum Bum Cream is usually good enough at moisturizing so that my skin doesn’t become itchy. However, I find that my more troublesome areas (i.e. my back) it cannot exactly tame. That being said, this is not a cream meant for eczema! So I don’t fault it there.

Sol de Janeiro showed my photo some love! Got some concerned about my hazardous photos though…rightfully so…

Now, the firming and tightening I cannot speak to. That isn’t a concern for me, so I won’t comment on it.

Final Thoughts

The 240 ml jar is $45 USD / $59 CAD. Would I pay full price? Maybe, if I was to treat myself and I had no other body lotions or creams on hand. Most likely though, I would wait to take advantage of sales and my Sephora discount! A $59 body cream isn’t exactly in my budget.

Another option is the current Sol de Janeiro holiday set, Carnaval Celebration Set which includes a full size cream and a bunch of other goodies for $77 CAD. Still pricey, but if you’re going to invest in the cream, you might as well take advantage of a good deal!

  1. I really love the scent of this cream, and I appreciate your review. I don’t think I would ever pay that much for a cream though. No matter how much it smells. You know what I mean?

  2. It’s a bit pricey but if I’m to get something more softening than I usually do, I’ll gravitate towards this cream. I don’t pay as much attention to body care (as opposed to skincare) but I think at some point I’ll have to. Especially that I already have got stretch marks 😭
