The Ordinary Moisturizer: Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA Review

The Ordinary is known for its simplicity: excellent skincare approached from a scientific standpoint and no frills. They are also known for their highly affordable price points.

I used The Ordinary’s moisturizer, priced at $7.70 CAD (100ml), for about 2 weeks night and day with mostly other Ordinary products. Here’s my take on this affordable moisturizer.

My skin type: Dry patches due to eczema, prone to minor acne, otherwise normal.

About

This is a pretty basic moisturizer with natural moisturizing components already present in the skin such as hyaluronic acid, amino acids and ceramides.

It comes in a 30ml ($5.80 CAD) and 100ml ($7.70 CAD) container. It is available at The Ordinary, Well.ca, Sephora, Ulta, and LookFantastic.

Ingredients

Cruelty-free, alcohol-free, silicone-free, sulfate-free.

Contains some fragrance.

Contains plenty of amino acids, and conditioning ingredients like sodium hyaluronate, glycerin, vitamin E, and ceramides. Full list of ingredients here.

Review

The positives first: this is a very simple, non-greasy and affordable moisturizer that is easy to mix with serums and apply. It also absorbs fairly quickly, leaving minimal residue behind. There are some great ingredients in there (although I don’t know enough to talk about the actual formulation).

That’s pretty much where the positives end for me.

Overall, I’m underwhelmed with this product. I absolutely love The Ordinary and what they stand for: no nonsense products. Their serums work wonders for me and are what got me into using vitamin C. However, this moisturizer is simply not hydrating enough for my dry skin. I’d recommend this for normal to oilier skin types.

It is recommended that you use this product with Ordinary serums i.e. hyaluronic acid, squalane, etc. I do this, but it just isn’t enough. By midday, sometimes the end of the day, my skin still feels dry and in need of something more.

There are better, more effective moisturizers out there. Despite the affordable price, I will not be repurchasing this. I hope The Ordinary comes out with a more intensive cream for dry skin types. Furthermore…let’s skip the whole “one size fits all” moisturizer concept. It’s just not based in reality.

Check out my reviews on The Ordinary’s Squalane Cleanser, Squalane Oil and Salicylic Acid Treatment; they’re all great products.
