My Skincare Routine and How it’s Changed my Dry-Combo Skin

Skin type | Combination: Mostly normal with dry patches and eczema flare-ups, dry lip area, occasional acne and small breakouts, sometimes oily T-zone.

Despite my combination skin, my main concern has always been the dry, patchy spots. My random bits of acne don’t last long (usually, though lately…ugh, that’s another story), and otherwise it tends to be “normal”.

I only began taking skincare seriously last year. Up until then, I just washed my face with water and/or Cetaphil sometimes and slathered on Nivea.

And nothing against Nivea; it’s actually quite a useful moisturizer. It just didn’t keep my skin hydrated for long enough. I figured that was normal and reapplying was inevitable, but I’ve come to see that isn’t the case.

Sometimes, I would be too lazy to remove my makeup at night. And when I did clean my makeup off, I knew I wasn’t getting it all off…but /shrug.

Despite all of this, my skin seemed all right! So why care? Sure I had the dry patches all the time, but it was fine. This is just how it’s going to be, I thought.

Last year, however, I really became self-conscious of my skin when I began breaking out all over my chin and lower cheeks.

What really got me self-conscious, though, was that I realized my skin looked tired and dull all the time. Like, very obviously and strangely so. I felt I had lost any and all colour and life in my face.

I just really didn’t look or feel like myself, and I hated that.

I thought it might be normal, and was skeptical that “skincare” or a “routine” was necessary and would help, but I began researching and looking into products anyway.

After quite a few trial and error products, I finally came across my current routine that I have been using for approximately four months now.

I feel so much happier in my own skin now, and see what a proper skincare routine can do for you.

It’s also just really fun. I look forward to it every morning and night.

The Routine:

AM:

  1. Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser
    • Been faithful to this for years, though it doesn’t really provide moisture or anything. At the very least, it doesn’t strip my skin of moisture, and is a great makeup remover. Definitely must follow up with a foam cleanser if I’m wearing makeup, though. Also, Costco has the best deal on this cleanser.
  2. Thayer’s Alcohol-free Rose Petal Witch Hazel with Aloe Vera
  3. The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5
  4. The Ordinary Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate Solution 20% in Vitamin F
    • A vitamin C derivative that is oil soluble and less potent than straight up L-Ascorbic Acid (pure vitamin C); this product is a good start for those who are new to using vitamin C. May be harsh on sensitive or oilier skin.
  5. Laneige Water Bank Moisture Cream (review here)
  6. Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask
    • I use this as a lip balm. It stays on the lips forever, it’s thick and softening. So comfortable on.

PM:

  1. Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser
    • 2nd cleanse with Ole Henriksen Foam Cleanser (only when wearing makeup)
  2. The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5
  3. The Ordinary Squalane
  4. The Ordinary Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate Solution 20% in Vitamin F
  5. Laneige Water Bank Moisture Cream
    • Laneige Sleeping Water Mask (If my skin is really dry and/or eczema flare-ups appear)
  6. Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask
    • For moisturizing the lips and avoiding dryness the next morning
  • The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Solution (as a spot treatment for acne when needed)

I built up this routine very slowly; first I incorporated The Ordinary products and then the Laneige moisturizer (review here) as I was focusing more on hydration. I’m still fully trying to get used to using a toner, as that is new for me, but I do like that it helps prep the skin for serums and also clear away any impurities left behind.

So far, this routine has worked well for me in terms of moisturizing and brightening. My face looks bright and alive, and I don’t look tired all the time.

In terms of the *glow up* and altering my face drastically, it was definitely after I began using The Ordinary’s vitamin C formulation; this product made a huge difference to my complexion. A full review of that will come later, and perhaps a guide to vitamin C products, but for now I will say that if you are new vitamin C products, try to begin with something less potent like Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate (a light oil) to make sure your skin can deal.

I’m still looking to slowly experiment and improve my routine.
